Travel Tip Tuesday - Make Lists

We are in vacation countdown mode right now. We are leaving one week from today....and we will have the joy of driving about 7-8 hours (that is what it would be with no stops...with the two little guys I am sure that it will end up being MUCH longer).

When I am getting ready to go away I have mutiple lists going at the same time. I keep them together, on the fridge or something, and update them at least a couple of times a day when I am in full travel planning / preparation mode.

Types of Lists:

1.) Children's Items to be packed for the hotel (I keep a list for each of them, because the get too long when combined)

  • Including Clothes (for the kids I pack at least two outfits per day), pajama's, underwear / diapers / pull-ups, Swimsuits / swim diapers, favorite stuffed animal for bedtime (many time this will go in the bag for the car though), shoes, socks, toothbrush, hairbrush, special baby / children's soap that you may use....for the baby we will also include extra bottles, formula, baby food, spoons, bottle cleaner and dish soap. All these items and probably more will be packed into the luggage and stored in the back of the car or be checked luggage if you are flying (this won't include any items that will be needed during the car ride / flight).
2.) Children's Items to be packed for the car / plane

  • This will include toys / games / books for the car for the older guy, some baby toys (distractions) for the little guy, one change of clothes for the older one and a couple of outfits for the baby, possibly a stuffed animal (especially if you are driving / flying at night) and all diaper bag necessities - diapers, wipes, changing pad (unless you want poop on the floor / seat of your car - which is where you will be changing the baby when you stop somewhere the is just too gross for diaper changing), bottles, formula, baby food, spoons, bottled water for baby's bottles

3.) Items to be packed in the cooler

  • This will only be applicable if traveling by car and will include very different things based on the distance you are traveling or if your hotel will have a refrigerator. Here are some of the standard items on our list:
  • Juice Boxes
  • Water
  • Fruit Snacks
  • Crushers
  • Bread
  • Peanut butter and jelly
  • Sandwich Meat / cheese / condiments
These items should all be "eat on the go" items to decrease the amount of time during stops (especially if you have a long drive)

4.) Clothing Items for my husband and I - we can usually just do one list for the two of us (this will include out toiletries that we are bringing)

5.) Miscellaneous Items

  • DVD Player for the Car
  • Stroller
  • Pack and Play
  • Games for the hotel - though we rarely using them so they just wind up taking up space
  • GPS
  • Laptop
  • Camera
  • Cell Phones
  • Chargers (for phones, laptops, etc...)
  • Cords
  • Camera batteries
Now, I am sure that I am forgetting things. I don't have my lists in front of me....but you get the point.

To ensure that you are leaving the house with everything that you want / need......MAKE LISTS
